Vitrenko lashes out at snap elections, saying her party’s coffers are empty
Reshuffling the ruling coalition without the elections will only boost instability in Ukraine. The only peaceful way to break the present political deadlock is to hold snap elections. However, a new, so-called broad coalition [uniting the Party of Regions and Yushchenko followers] is in the making. Its is a sellout on the part of PoR, because Ukrainian gave them a mandate to pursue the policy alternative to the Yushchenko-Tymoshenko coalition, Natalia Vitrenko, the leader of the Progressive Socialist Party told ZIK May 28.Simultaneously, N. Vitrenko says the PoR betrayal has its logic. “They cheated on their voters and are after only lining their pockets with money. Had Yushchenko, Yanukovych and Akhmetov had any moral scruples, they would have agreed to a snap election to get a mandate to create a new coalition. Now they have no right to reshuffle the majority in parliament,” she adds.
N. Vitrenko says she is convinced the creation of a broad coalition won’t stabilize the situation. “The trouble with Ukraine, Georgia and other countries seeking NATO membership is that their leaders think they can go on cheating their peoples forever. First, they must get a mandate from the people. If political parties do not put such aspirations on their campaign agendas, if people are against, if elections are rigged, there can be no stability. Assuming there is a reshuffle of the coalition, it will destabilize Ukraine completely, Vitrenko says.
In the opinion of Vitrenko, snap elections will be held in early fall. They must not become a battle ground of parties and intellect, not money sacks. “If the elections are the same as we had in Kyiv or in September 2007, nobody needs such elections. It’s a disgrace, with only money sacks competing, low-income voters brazenly bought and the power looking the other way. What do we need such elections for? To see who stole more and who can buy more votes? People can tolerate such things for a couple of months after the elections, and then everything will explode,” Vitrenko stressed.
For the time being, it is not known if PSP will field its candidates in the future elections. “We have no money. We can compete with intellect or organization. At present, PSP is effectively blacked out by the media,” she complained.
As stressed by Vitrenko, Yury Lutsenko’s future is clear – he will join the Tymoshenko bloc. “He is already in the Tymoshenko camp and can claim the same privileged as Vinsky, another defector from the Socialist party. There is no other option for Lutsenko,” Natalia Vitrenko opined.
