Lviv Mayor Sadovyj next in line after Chernovetsky and Dobkin to get the boot: civil movement to dismiss him launched in Lviv

Samozakhyst (Self-Protection), a civil movement for the dismissal of Lviv Mayor Andryj Sadovyj, was launched in Lviv Apr. 18. It unites a wide range of representatives, from students to businessmen. They have already installed a tent village outside the council building and announced an open-ended protest, its leader Roman Liubytsky said, speaking in a press conference Apr. 18.

The protesters say they are fully determined to push for Sadovyj’s resignation, project coordinator Rostyslav Hetman said. Apr. 21 and 22, the NGO has plans to state a rally near the council building, something Pres Yushchenko won’t fail to see when he comes on a work visit to Lviv Apr. 22. Their complaints are not political: high utility and transportation tariffs, pressure on small businesses, corruption amid officials, illegal sales of land and assets, dilapidated condition of Lviv buildings and infrastructure.

As of Apr. 17, Samozakhyst went over the radio with calls to Lviv residents to unite for the protection of their rights and stopping the abuse of office by the authorities. The NGO started its phone hot line: 220-18-06. According to Hetman, they receive up to 600 calls a day from NGOs, entrepreneurs and residents.

Samozakhyst activists hope to hand their petition containing their demands and proposals to Pres Yushchenko on Apr. 22. The incumbent must monitor Lviv problems personally, they say, because under the present mayor the city will be turned into a ruin and lose the chance of hosting the Euro-2012 tournament.
