Lawmakers in Brody, Lviv commemorate those whom Nurenberg tribunal convicted as criminals, Russian diplomat says

Russia consulate general in Lviv says the decision by the Brody rayon council to erect a monument to Ukrainians who fought in the SS Halychyna division is an elevation of those who were convicted as criminals in WWII. “We believe the revision of verdicts passed by the International Military Tribunal in Nurenberg is illegal,” Consul General Yevgenij Guzeyev told ZIK Apr. 17.

“The decision by Brody deputies says nothing about the fact that the SS Halychyna division was part of the German armed forces waging war against the Soviet Army. The division, as other military units of the German army, was pronounced as a criminal formation by the Nurenberg tribunal,” the Russian diplomat said.

Comment by ZIK

Apr. 15, the Brody rayon council endorsed an appeal to the Lviv oblast council, oblast administration, companies, organizations, residents and foreigners to restore the monument to Ukrainians who fought in the ranks of the SS Halychyna division and were killed in action in 1944 near Brody. The original monument was installed in 1991 but it was destroyed on orders from USSR top military leaders.

The International Military Tribunal tried former leaders of Nazi Germany between Nov. 20, 1945 and October 1, 1946 in Nurenberg, West Germany.
