There was no winner in the gas war with Russia, Ukraine just brought it home to Russia that it owns the pipeline, expert V. Saprykin says

“I don’t think there was a winner in the gas war with Russia. Ukraine just managed to bring it home to the Russians that both countries depend on one another,” Director for energy programs at the Razumkov Center for Economic and Political Programs Volodymyr Saprykin told ZIK March 14.

The removal of UkrHazEnerho from Ukraine’s gas market is a positive development even though now Gazprom was allowed to sell 7.5 bn cu.m of gas directly to Ukrainian industrial consumers. As Ukraine had never controlled its share in UkrHazEnerho JV, it never received any dividends, he stressed.

“I am suspicious, though, that the contract with Gazprom is renewable every year. It means that in 2009 Ukrainian companies will have to buy gas at average European prices,” V. Saprykin stressed.

Even if Turkmenistan gas goes up in price next year, it will still be cheaper than the Russian gas. The recent gas talks with Russia were more transparent than in 2006, the expert admitted.
