Democratic Association of Hungarians worried over anti-Hungarian campaign in Ukraine’s media

The board of the Democratic Association of Hungarians, DAH, has issued a statement expressing its concern over anti-Hungarian feelings played up by Ukraine’s electronic and printed media after monuments had been erected in the Carpathian mountains and Mukacheve castle, ZIK reported March 11.

“Previously isolated cases have, unfortunately, become regular. The anti-Hungarian campaign cannot but cause indignation, especially because it is leveled against the Hungarian community in Zakarpattya and Ukraine as a whole. Hungary was the first to recognize Ukraine’s independence. It has always viewed Ukraine as its strategic partner, maintaining excellent economic, trade and cultural links. Hungary was the first to offer easy cross-border procedures for Ukrainians,” the statement goes on.

DAH statement called on the communities of EU, Ukraine and Hungary to denounce the attempts aimed at fuelling interethnic hostilities.

Comment by ZIK

A statement released March 6 by the Svoboda Ukrainian Association stressed that “anti-Ukrainian and anti-state political forces in Zakarpattya are trying to erect foreign symbols in the area, with the local authorities looking the other way.” SUA urged Lviv and Zakarpattya oblast deputies to pass appropriate decisions to dismantle foreign symbols in these oblasts that humiliate the national pride of Ukrainians.
