Until Tymoshenko, Yushchenko and Yanukovych make short work of one another, there won’t be peace in Ukraine
The latest development in Verkhovna Rada, the 3-week blockade by the Party of Regions followed by the signing of the protocol on understanding on March 6, is nothing but a short-lived conspiracy of Ukrainian tycoons. The attempt to make a truce is a no-win scenario. Until the present political leaders destroy one another, until Yushchenko and Tymoshenko, or Tymoshenko and Yanukovych clash openly, there won’t be any rapprochement in Ukraine, Communist MP Leonid Hrach told ZIK March 6.The recent stalemate in VR indicates bitter squabbles and confrontation among the three major Ukrainian clans from Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk and Kyiv as well as servility towards the United States shown by Yushchenko, Tymoshenko and Speaker Yatseniuk. “We, the communists, do not play these dirty games. That is why we didn’t sign March 6 protocol on understanding, we will not fall for the lies aimed to mislead the nation,” L. Hrach stressed.
According to L. Hrach, Yanukovych will have it coming now that the protocol was signed. “Voters in the east and south of Ukraine will never forgive Yanukovych for unblocking VR and mending fences with other political parties. His chances to do well in the future presidential election are much worse now. Meanwhile, Tymoshenko has greatly enhanced her chances by striking a deal with the Party of Regions,” L. Hrach added.

Opening a VR session on March 6, Speaker Yatseniuk said the major factions signed a protocol on understanding aimed to unblock VR. Following this, Rada passed a resolution on the procedure for Ukraine’s accession to NATO. It was backed by 248 lawmakers, 175 from PoR, 34 from BYuT, 19 from NUNS and 20 from the Lytvyn bloc, with the communists abstaining.
In line with the resolution, any decision to join NATO must be based on the national referendum. VR speaker has to inform the NATO secretary about the resolution, one of its clauses runs. The resolution comes into force on March 6.
