We don’t swap horses in midstream, Party of Regions says
The PoR is unlikely to soften its stand on the NATO issue. PoR has earlier made concessions – and paid for this with its approval ratings. Voters in the east and south of Ukraine didn’t back PoR in the 2007 parliamentary elections because we went in for compromises with the Orangists too often. Despite its shrinking approval ratings, PoR will not change its leader Viktor Yanukovych until the 2009 presidential election, Volodymyr Kornilov, head of the Institute of CIS States, said.According to him, the recent decision of PoR to resort to street protests against Ukraine’s course toward NATO sends a signal that PoR is guided by the interests of its voters. This form of protest has proven to be the most efficient tool in Ukrainian politics, Kornilov added.
There will be snap parliamentary elections in Ukraine, but not in 2008. The present stand-off in VR will soon be settled, Kornilov predicts. However, Pres Yushchenko is eager to let Verkhovna Rada idle for 30 days [a condition allowing him to disband it – Ed.]. This will enable Yushchenmo to blackmail Premier Tymoshenko in the course of future political bargaining, the pro-Yanukovych analyst said.
PoR is made up of various groups, it has its hawks and doves, and not all support the PoR-initiated blockade in VR. But there are many members in the party with a common sense and they will not replace Yanukovych. There is no other popular politician who can match Yanukovych, he added.
