Ukraine’s foreign office urges Russia to tone down its statements regarding Lviv incident
We have a reaction by Ukraine’s foreign office to Feb. 23 statements by Russian officials and the media about the damage done to the graves of Soviet soldiers in Lviv. In a statement to ZIK Feb. 27, the Ukrainian FO says the tone of the Russian official statement and comments in the Russian media is strange, stressing that it expects that “the practices of being a sole judge on what is going on in another country and arbitrarily expound its history” will end.“The humiliating and biased tone typical to Russia’s FO, some of its influential politicians and the media will not enhance the relations between both countries and cannot be accepted by Ukraine,” runs the Ukrainian statement.
“We condemn any vandalism against historical monuments, and Lviv city authorities have taken steps to repair the damage and provide guards at the monument. We will spare no efforts to find the perpetrators of immoral acts with regard to cultural and historical monuments – without any lecturing from abroad and biased evaluations of Ukraine’s historical past and present political forces,” the Ukrainian FO statement says. Comment by the ZIK information agency
Bronze parts of the monument to Soviet soldiers at the Hill of Glory in Lviv were stolen by unidentified persons on the eve of Feb.23 holiday (the Day of the Homeland Defender in Ukraine and the
ninetyth anniversary of the Soviet army). A similar incident happened at the monument on May 13, 2007 but the police have not yet completed their investigation.Feb. 23, Russia’s FO released its statement on the accident in Lviv. The Russian called on the Ukrainian authorities to investigate the accident and bring criminals to justice.
In particular, the statement says: “Such derision of the memory about the dead, a frequent occurrence in Western Ukraine, can cause anything but indignation.
In a sneaking way, acting under the cover of the night – like their ideological Banderite fathers – the present nationalists have started a war against the graves of the heroes who gave up their lives for the liberation of Ukraine.
The Russian party expects that the Ukrainian authorities will take every effort to punish the criminals and stop the vandals.
We have the right to demand due respect to our common memory,” the Russian FO statement says.
