Hill of Glory vandalism in Lviv is a well-orchestrated provocation
Vandals who tore away part of the bronze decorations at the Hill of Glory in Lviv where Soviet officers are buried acted in line with a well-planned scenario. The vandals timed their robbery with the Defenders’ Day on Feb. 23 widely marked in the former USSR, says Ihor Havryshkevych, director of the Lychakivsky cemetery of which Glory Hill is a part.According to the director, the criminals walked away a 90 centimeter piece of a bronze decoration worth $200. The robbery is now investigated by the police.
Ihor Havryshkevych also said that the police are still investigating a similar act of vandalism on the Glory Hill which happened on May 13, 2007 when a 2.7 meter bronze decoration was stolen.
The police have not kept the cemetery informed about the course of that investigation, the director complained.
