Olijnyk’s resignation indicates his family intention to quit coal business, Ihor Pochynok from The Express says
“This morning, Feb. 20, I have complained to Lviv oblast prosecutor Ya. Skop about harassment of The Express. I also appealed to Lviv oblast prosecutor Oleksij Bahanets to ensure safety for Express journalists investigating former governor Petro Olijnyk’s activities, notably, in the coal business, The Express editor-in-chief Ihor Pochynok said in a Feb. 20 statement to the ZIK information agency. -Ihor Pochynok said another installment following up on the criminal cases opened against Petro Olijnyk’s business companies is going to come out in the next issue of The Express. Despite Olijnyk’s resignation, The Express will continue to throw light on Petro Olijnyk’s and his family incrimination in siphoning off state money from the oblast coal sector.
“Olijnyk’s resignation sends a signal that he and his family are ready to quit the coal business. Two families control the sales of coal mined in state-run coalmines. They control hundreds of millions of hryvnias allocated as subsidies. It seems that both families are aware of the threat of being exposed and begin to pull out of business. Depending on whether Yushchenko will accept or reject Olijnyk’s resignation, we will know if a real anti-corruption campaign, not its imitation, has started.
Here I would agree with VR lawmaker Yaroslav Kendzior who said in his interview with The Express that many in the president’s entourage must be arrested for corrupt dealings. But they are not – because they belong to the pack,” Ihor Pochynok said.
