US Ambassador Taylor condones media gagging in Lviv
Feb. 19, the US Ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor met with first Deputy Oblast Governor Valery Pyatak as part of his visit to Lviv. However, when the ambassador wanted to be filled in on the current political situation in the oblast, media representatives were banned from the meeting. -Valery Pyatak told the American diplomat about the priorities for the Lviv oblast development till 2015. He told about plans to bring the Lviv oblast closer to Europe, improve the investment climate, step up student exchange. V. Pyatak called the Euro-2012 tournament a good opportunity to implement large-scale projects in the oblast. He even referred to the delays in Euro-2012 preparations as a positive thing, saying “It’s better to stall for a month or two and then make resolute headway.”
William Taylor thanked the oblast authorities for making preparations for Euro-2012 a priority. He then said he expected to be informed about the current political situation in the oblast in a closer environment. Following this, oblast deputy governor Taras Batenko gave a signal to his press service staff to expel journalists from the meeting.
