Orange forces launch massive attack on freedom of expression in Ukraine, says head of National Union of Journalists, Lviv branch

A massive attack on media freedoms is under way in Ukraine. Unfortunately, one of the Orange political parties is involved in the attack, head of Lviv oblast TV/Radio Company Yaroslav Klymovych said Jan. 31, commenting on the dismissal of The Lvivska Gazeta editor Ihor Hulyk. -

“Ihor Hulyk is a professional journalist, publicist and media manager. During his time as LG editor, the newspaper began to represent the whole of Ukraine, not merely the Lviv oblast. The newspaper has always complied with all standards of journalism,” Klymovych explained.

“The Lviv branch of the National Union of Journalists is to address the dismissal on Jan. 31. We are going to submit proposals on how to improve the legislation: publications owned by dubious businesses should not be registered. We will not tolerate to ignore one of the main achievements of the Orange revolution – the freedom of expression,” Klymovych stressed.

The chief editor of LG Ihor Hulyk was dismissed on Jan. 29.

“My dismissal was both typical and paradoxical. It was typical because many media tycoons view the media as a tool to advance their business projects. It was paradoxical because they continue to pay lip service to their commitment to democracy and freedom of expression,” Hulyk said.

The LG is owned by Roman Shlapak, Intermarket trading company head, Lviv city council deputy and member of Our Ukraine.

    • UkrToday, Anthony van der Craats from Australia, always speaking against Orange and in favor of Ukraine's mafia. His idea of free speech is anonymous slurs. Google the name.

    • There is a disturbing trend of threats and intimidation against anyone that challenges or questions the policies and actions of the ruling coalition. The extent of intimidation includes harassment and death threats. Sadly these acts are from people who claim to support the "Orange coalition". I do not believe that this sought of action is sanctioned or supported by the Mai parties but ever the less the actions of this minority do not serve their cause or the rights of free speech.
