Lvivska Gazeta becomes true acid test for democracy, chief editor Ihor Hulyk says

“My dismissal was both typical and paradoxical. It was typical because Ukrainian media tycoons view the press as a tool for advancing their other business projects. On the other hand, it was paradoxical because media owners never stop to pay lip service to their support for democracy and freedom of the media,” this is how The Lvivska Gazeta chief editor and member of the Ukrainian Union of Journalists Ihor Hulyk commented to ZIK on his sudden dismissal.

“Double standards, shady land sales, widespread corruption of Lviv lawmakers, backroom deals that can solve any problem – these maladies will continue to challenge independent journalism for a long time,” Ihor Hulyk admitted.
“The first chilling signal was sent when they tried to fire Mykola Saveliev [an investigative Lviv journalist – ZIK]. I do not say The Lvivska Gazeta was a yardstick of impartiality when I was editor, but it became a good acid test for the true motives of many local tycoons. It was also a symbol of the Lviv school of journalism traditions. It also revealed the inaptitude of local powerbrokers to promote the goals of democratic journalism. In my opinion, my dismissal should warn those who intend to implement new media projects in Halychyna,” The Lvivska Gazeta chief editor Ihor Hulyk said.
