Lviv authorities crack down on deadbeat tenants including lecturers, judges, officials, even police officers

Jan. 24, the Lviv authorities have launched a public campaign to force deadbeats to pay their rent and utilities arrears. The deadbeats, whose debts are ranging from $400 to $2,200, include well-heeled categories like lecturers, law enforcement officials, judges, city council officials and managers of big companies. The ZIK correspondent was on the team visiting deadbeats homes.

The team was made up of a local sheriff, bailiffs, two representatives of an NGO, head of Shevchenko rayon administration and journalists. In the first apartment they entered the tenants readily showed their possessions: several TV sets, a PC and an automatic washing machine. As almost all their household equipment was bought on credit, they couldn’t cope with their utility bills on time.

When the bailiffs began to take stock of valuable property, the scared tenants pledged to pay their bills the next day to save their property from arrest.

Under the Ukrainian law, the property arrested against utilities debts can be sold after 5 days.

As soon as the word about the raid of officials spread in this multi-storey building, other deadbeats preferred to ignore any bell rings from the officials despite the light being on in their apartments.

Such insolent behavior provoked a quick reaction of the rayon administration chief Yaroslava Bilostotska. She warned the deadbeats that next week bailiffs will force their way in their apartments having court property seizure writs.
