Bill to recognize OUN-UPA fighters as WWII combatants tabled in Verkhovna Rada
Jan. 23, a bill to recognize the fighters of OUN-UPA as WWII combatants was registered in Verkhovna Rada. The bill is authored by Ivan Stojko, Roman Tkach and Yaroslav Kendzior (NUNS), VR press service told the ZIK information agency. In a memo to the bill, the authors say that one of the reasons for OUN-UPA army formation was NKVD-organized atrocities against civilian Ukrainian population. The authors also point out that the fight by OUN-UPA for Ukraine’s freedom and independence acquired the dimensions of the national liberation struggle as of September 1939 through the late 50s, that OUN-UPA became a warring side in the conflict and its fighters, accordingly, must be treated as WWII combatants. Under the bill, the government undertakes guarantees of social protection for OUN-UPA veterans.
Under the bill, the appropriate funding is to be entered when the 2008 is revised later in the year.
